Short blog article that summarises some observations from a recent pixilated lip sync test we carried out:

Any further thoughts, advice, feedback warmly received :) x

Ah, yes - that's great advice Andrew! It's easy to under estimate the muscle control/patience that your subject needs to do the work. I was *very* lucky with the young actress who worked with me on the last animated short, as it was a tall order for a child to work like that. We did break shooting down into smaller sequences over several days to get the best from the kids. They were great though - and bizarrely seemed to 'get it' quicker than the adults!

Hey, nice group. I love pixilation because, for me, it hearkens back to the first days of film making and trick films made using the stop-motion substitution technique. People like Jan Svankmajer managed to instill that sense of magic and wonderment in their films that people must of felt when they saw early trick films like the Haunted Hotel. Animation today feels like its lost that sense of magic.

I was wondering.... is there a way, or program that takes frames out of a clip and saves them as pictures?

Hello Lance,

Lovely to meet you and glad to have you here in 'All Things Pixilated!'

Yes, you could use a Adobe Premiere to solve your problem.

TO EXPORT A VIDEO CLIP 'FRAME-BY-FRAME' AS STILL IMAGES IN ADOBE PREMIERE:
In Premiere (CS4), create a new project, import your video file and drop in onto the timeline. Then export the file and choose one of the graphics formats Premiere supports, making sure you check the 'Export As A Sequence' checkbox on the Video Tab. This will export the video as a sequence of still image files (per frame) in the format you have selected.

For more information see:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WSF39C063F-6168-40ef-B854-6853E88AF1B5.html

This is a useful trick for rotoscoping, as these individual images can be imported into graphics software (like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop) and either used as a guide for creating animated sequences, or drawn directly onto. You can then use a good frame grabber (like StopMotion Pro) to reimport your still image sequence and export back to a video format.

I should add, however, that this isn't the way that pixilated animations are typically made and you may upset some animators if you describe their work as video with frames dropped out ;). See this thread for the debate!!!

Anyway, hope this helps and best of luck with your project!

Also,

If you wanted just one or two images from a video clip, then repeat the process above, but in the Export Settings window, use the clip timeline (displayed beneath the clip preview) to scrub along to the frame you want, making sure the 'Export As A Sequence' checkbox is *unchecked*. This will export only the frame you want in the graphics file format selected.

So it depends whether you need a few or loads of stills :)

Hello!!!

Welcome to "All Things Pixilated", a group for anyone who uses, or is interested in using, pixilation and other timelapse techniques in their work. I've started this group as I use these techniques a lot and would love to chew the fat with other animators who are as fascinated with these production approaches as I am.

Please feel free to upload photos or videos of your own pixilated/timelapse animations and join me on the discussion boards to share your thoughts. I'll also be burrowing through the Intrawebs for tutorials and other juicy "how to" titbits to post, with the aim of building a useful knowledgebase for everyone here. Any questions or comments, I'd love to hear from you. Just hop over to my profile to contact me or find out more about me.

Love

I'll certainly take a look at what you have been doing regarding Pixilated animations & timelapse. I find creating really large animations great fun & my god their so knackering! Please take a look at my videos. Cheers Dean

Hi Dean, so pleased to meet you! Would love you to check out the work, there's a few different bits and bobs by members here, feel free to add your own pixilated/timelapse creations. Funny you should mention how physical these productions can be - I've even started working out in preparation for the next one. Will check out your work for sure, thanks for stopping by :)

Hi White Rabbit, i've upoladed some clips onto the Animate Clay website! Its superb on here to meet fantastic like minded people. My idea started through watching Art Attack on CITV in the uk, but its developed since then, I'm striving to create amazing pixilated animations like these! (See clips, Cold Play strawberry swing is awesome!) Hope to hear from you soon

Hello! Yes, agreed those are great videos (although I still think Matt Clark's version of 'Strawberry Swing' was better, even if it wasn't pixilated ;)

I'm loving the larger, 'floor-based' pixilation works you're into. I'm sure you're familiar with 'Her Morning Elegance' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY) which seemed to kick off a wave of commercial productions in this vein. Works well with the kids though I'm sure :) I must give it go myself soon!

Thanks for the links, stay in touch, feel free to post anything timelapse/pixilation related anytime! xxx

Hi watched Matt Clark's version! Yes its very good, I prefer the pixilated version myself. The pixilated films i've been doing are created in very short time frames! I hope one day I get the chance to collaborate with others & create something similar to strawberry swing or 'her morning elegance'. I believe it would be possible with the right team around me we could create huge animations i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iDG4nRbgnI&feature=related or ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCKts0gufRg&feature=related or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcQIwbvGRKU or http://www.youtube.com/user/notsonoisy#p/u/5/epEjByo2G-M or http://www.youtube.com/user/notsonoisy#p/u/20/hyM54e9sbQk or http://www.youtube.com/user/notsonoisy#p/u/7/G0LtUX_6IXY
Hope to hear from you soon
Cheers Dean

Hello! Sorry for the slow reply, been up to my ears in it recently!

The links are fabulous! Love them!!! Must takes aaaaages to choreograph! Impressive just from that perspective but also beautiful to watch - some very neat ideas... Yes! Huge animation is the way forward for sure. You'll have to let us know if you do get a team together. I reckon it would be magical. :)
