I agree with you wholeheartedly on the loss of magic. It's funny how often that word crops up in our circles! Love the trick film era also - big fan of Richter, Cohl, etc - 'wonderful', in the truest sense of the word :)

Yeah there films were great. There was also Charles Bower who made a lot of stop-motion with objects/puppets and himself. I haven't really been able to find much of his work. You can check out some clips here:

The clips are slapstick and absurd at times.

There is a DVD of his work, but it is selling on Amazon for $183.99

Hello! Yes, Charles Bowers is an interesting figure isn't he. I've been digging about a little on the Intrawebs and I've found a Facebook group that has pooled quite a bit of information on him:

So interesting (and sad) that someone that had such a profound influence on stop-motion filmmaking seems to have been largely forgotten. I'd love to see more of his work, but $183 is a little out of my price range!
