About Me
Hi, I'm Marc - creator of Animateclay.com. If you have suggestions on how to make this site more fun and easier to use - let me know!
Hobbies
Sculpting when I get the chance is something I love to do. Plus finding rare animation from other countries on the internet is a favorite thing for me.

I also make tutorial videos which are lots of fun to make.
Books
Any of the how-to books on animation!
Movie Interests
Most of the older Claymation films from the 80's and early 90's when clay was the ultimate animation medium. So Mark Twain, Meet the Raisins and some of the rarer Billy Budd films.

Marc SpessMarc Spess on Friday, 27 April 2012 19:30

Nope, it will melt instead. Sculpey will harden when you bake it.

what are those books called that have the frames from someone walking, or a horse running or a bird flying. that we can use as a reference for animation?
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Wednesday, 11 April 2012 04:50

Hi Lance, the man who made those books was Eadweard Muybridge.

Hi Biju, your site is nice. It is very well put together and easy to navigate. I find the photography section interesting as well. Maybe your art teachings will make a big difference in the lives of some of the people in your country.

Josh,
do u know when you'll finish zombie pirates?
it's really cool...what do u make most of the items in it out of (super Sculpey?)
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Tuesday, 20 March 2012 17:41

I can't say when it will be done since my life is really busy now. I use Super Sculpey for hard props and Van Aken Claytoon for the soft clay puppets. I also use foam latex.

I noticed you mentioned flexi sculpey somewhere. is it that bake and bend stuff! I bought a bunch of that bake and bend stuff for my class (i am doing an animation explorations class at my school) but when I tried it on a puppet, the joints just crack.. what is your experience with the sculpey stuff... I am going to have to have the kids remove the bake and bend and use regular van aken clay! at least I have not baked it yet! any suggestions?
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Monday, 19 March 2012 21:18

Experimenting with these clays is the only way to get a feel for them. They might have changed the formula since I last used it. Also when that clay ages it becomes harder. You can't bend it when it's thick too it has to be thin. It has its advantages on really small puppets or very if they are very skinny.

I've gotten the AS eyes from the store but noticed the back has nub on the back...would i be able to cut them off with a scrollsaw?
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Thursday, 23 February 2012 07:36

Hey Jordan, yes you can. You can file it with hand files and sand paper also, they are plastic. Just be careful of your fingers!

Marc SpessMarc Spess on Saturday, 18 February 2012 02:34

Hey, Marc. I'm new to claymation, but your tutorials have helped me get a lot better in a fast amount of time, but there's something I don't quite get. Do you reccomend animating with foam latex puppets over just regular old clay molds? What's the difference other than the material what are the pros and cons to each one?
JosephJoseph on Saturday, 28 January 2012 16:49

NEVERMIND!

Marc SpessMarc Spess on Friday, 17 February 2012 02:54

Hi Joseph, were you the person who called me last week? Well, glad to help you out. I hope your project turns out nice.

hello marc I was wondering where I could buy the pipes that you put on your armatures for the arms ,I think there called k&s pipes but I cant find the ones that are shaped like A square.
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Friday, 17 February 2012 02:54

Ace Hardware sells those, also smallparts.com is a resource that I think carries K&S as well.

wiahmationwiahmation on Friday, 17 February 2012 09:01

thanks marc.

Hey Marc! Check out the ball-joint puppet armature that I've been working on! I built it using different alternative materials. I live in Brazil, where the parts are really hard to find and are very expensive, so I have to make do and be creative. Thanks very much!

Marc SpessMarc Spess on Friday, 17 February 2012 02:55

Hi Fernando, that armature looks really really good. Nice movements!

Hey Marc My names Ben and Im a filmmaker in San Francisco. I just wanted to let you know that I am finishing a 15min claymation movie that I started almost 6 years ago thanks to you. I bought all of my wire from you about 5 years back and I learned how to animate and make armatures from your website so thank you. Check out this rough cut I made of the big fight scene at the end. Let me know what ya think. Also keep it up with zombie pirates Ive been waiting a long time to see that shit.
Marc SpessMarc Spess on Thursday, 12 January 2012 01:09

Hi Ben, your film is really well done! Fight scenes like that are hard to pull off with so many puppets! Zombie Pirates is alive and well, but so are my responsibilities which keep growing. Hopefully I can get more done on it soon.
