February 1 to February 29, 2012: Monthly Challenge Ad Compiliation!
February 1 to February 29, 2012: Monthly Challenge Ad Compiliation!
Hey everyone, during last nights live show we discussed some changes to our challenges. No longer are we hosting quarterly short challenges, only monthly challenges. I gave everyone the opportunity to share ideas on how to make them even bigger since they are starting to grow in popularity.
One person came up with the idea of a YouTube ad. Then others chimed in and we decided it would be fun to have a dialogue about our challenges to compile into one video.
So what we need to do is come up with an idea of what will be said. Then Ron Cole offered to record his voice for everyone to animate to.
We'll need maybe 5-10 animators, maybe more to make the ad. I'm thinking 30-40 seconds long would be good. Everyone can animate a short segment and then we will combine them in an editing program.
What we need are some ideas on what Ron will say. So if anyone reading this wants to enter a segment for the ad, let everyone know what you think Ron could say. Then we'll make a short script and finalize it.
I think this could be a lot of fun and a great way for everyone to advertise their work as well as the challenges. I can upload the final film to my YouTube channel and post the video as a news item on the front page.
Re: February 1 to February 29, 2012: Monthly Challenge Ad Compiliation!
Would it just be a description of the site & monthly challenges with different characters saying what Ron Cole is saying? Or maybe something tense, like an animator trying to meet the deadline and all of the info would be at the end? Orrrrrr a compilation of animations & topics with some music & informative narrator? Orrrrr perhaps someone all bored surfing the web comes across animateclay.com, sees the topic and makes an awesome animation? Maybe one of those purposely cheesy ads that looks like it's from the mid-90s, with lots of thumbs-ups and huge fake grins. Could just be a blob of solid-colored clay that sort of demonstrates what Ron Cole is describing- "Winner chosen during AnimateClay Live Chats!" (blob turns into trophy).

I would like to be involved
Points to consider in the script:
- It's a monthly challenge (duh!).
- Run by animateclay.com (aka Marc Spess).
- Open to all ages and abilities.
- Ends at 8pm on last Wednesday of each month.
- Winner will be chosen by a vote during the Live Show by all attendees (this will be a good point to include as it advertises the show too).
- Winner gets to choose the following month's topic.
Marc, I think it might help interest if you posted the challenge outcome as a news story each month - like you have done previously. This could show the winning entry, followed by all the other entries. I think it would be an added incentive to see your name 'in lights' on the main page.
Hope this helped

Springboarding off an idea above, what if we had real footage of a bored person watching television. We are looking over his or her shoulder as they are lazily flipping through channels. As they are flipping through, all the dialogue starts to amazingly line up because they are, afterall, watching our compiled animations. We could parody common style shows like the news, cooking show, talk show, soap opera, commercials, whatever. The person watching television looks confused at first, then interested as the "tv shows" continue to line up, proclaiming information about the monthly challenge. At the end, we see a close up of the tv as information rolls through credit style with the animateclay website and other info. Just an idea, take it or leave it.

Instead of stating the obvious, such as who runs it, what site, how long it is, when it ends, etc. Why not do some marketing?
jk But really, instead of explaining, it, let's say something catchy, interesting, "hooking" - which will make viewers more likely to visit the website (which would be in a side-link/ at the end of the ad) than if it was just "animateclay is hosting a monthly challenge that runs from . . . ." Naturally, I don't know what he would say, I'm hoping someone else will come up with that grand idea fter reading this.

I get what you're saying, Jesse, but sometimes you have to state the obvious. My shoe-size, middle-name and favourite pizza topping are all obvious to me, but to someone who has never met me - or, to the point, someone who has never seen the monthly challenges - all the basic, essential information needs to be told (double pepperoni with peppers and chillies!). You're right about making the advert interesting - I wasn't suggesting just plain-old quote the stuff I said. Although, the over-the-top, 'shouty' adverts have me dashing for the off button quicker than you can say 'I say you buy one, you get one free, I say you buy one...' (UK people will know what I 'm talking about).
The final decision, of course, rests with Mr Spess - it being his site, and all
I think we could do with getting something down soon though, as it takes me a while to churn out any kind of animation (as has been evident in the last few challenges). Plus, Busy Ron Cole (as he should be addressed) will need time to do the recording.
Now I think I'll go order my favourite pizza

All good ideas everyone. I like the over-the-top voice idea. Maybe have Ron shouting like he's got to finish the entire script in 5 seconds. I always loved the Crazy Eddie commercials when I lived in New York. What do you guys think of something similar?
Buckners idea is good too. Maybe Buckner would you want to show some shots of a family sitting in front of a TV? Then we can zoom into the screen and show the rest of the films?
If you guys like this so far I'll take some of your suggestions and write up a script. Then we'll discuss how to do the rest and who wants to do what parts.
