There are a bunch of stop mo apps in the app store, Ive tried Stop motion studio and had a good experience with it. It had onion skinning and a cool option of clapping to take a picture so you don't have to touch the phone. I'm not too sure how it exports the video you shoot but like you say it does have a good camera. Maybe take a look at those, price wise you can't go wrong.
