My multiplane stop-motion film about sugar cane.

My multiplane stop-motion film about sugar cane.

Hey everyone,

My name is Lachlan and I am a filmmaker based in Australia. I am an aspiring cinematographer and most recently I tried my hand at stop-motion.

I made a 2 minute multiplane stop-motion film about sugar cane and the Australian sugar cane industry for a competition. I only found out about the competition 5 weeks before it closed, and prior to starting the project, I had little to no knowledge on how to achieve anything relating to stop-motion, though I have always been a fan of stop-motion films etc.

The film was shot in two's and animated by myself and another animator (again who had no background in animation), each scene in the completed film is all we shot, there were no test takes or do-overs, this was possible thanks to some careful planning and reference videos/animations.

We worked on it on weekends and as I work full time, we only got the chance to work on it some week nights. We did this for a month and managed to get it in just before the deadline.

You can find the completed video here, or see below.

Also have a look at the "making of" blog we put together, it's full of photos and some time lapse videos taken during animating:

The Story Of Cane-mation!

I have yet to complete a reflective blog post, but there are definitely things I would do differently, and things I did wrong which I will post about soon.

Feel free to ask me any questions or provide feedback, I'd love to hear from others.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

For someone who was simply 'trying their hand' at stop motion (and in a tight time frame no less), you ended up with a very smooth and professional looking piece. Congratulations!

I can't wait to hear and learn from everything you've learned.

Re: My multiplane stop-motion film about sugar cane.

Thank you for your kind words. It's interesting you mention the tight time frame, I think it provided a motivation, but also forced me to learn quickly, but also to be creative with my techniques in order to get it completed in time.

I hope to put up some more tumblr posts soon and to contribute in this great forum.

I really like the style of your video. It works well with the 2D and all the diffrent textures.

I hope you will continue to make videos!
