Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Cheap Armature Tutorial!

I created an armature tutorial over the weekend for those of us who want a relatively strong armature but don't want to rack out hundreds of dollars for a professionally built one.

You can find and download the tutorial at scribd: http://www.scribd.com/doc/34191994/Armature-Tutorial

Feel free to post flaws, suggestions, or, animations made with the tutorial.

READ THIS FIRST:
There are some things to keep in mind when making this tutorial. One, you might want to explore different types of washers than the metal one I used (such as lock washers). Two, glue the one-axis eye screws into the dowels so they don't accidentally turn during animation (the foot screw is most likely to turn during full stride). Just ensure that joints at the shoulders and hips aren't glued in, since the screw itself becomes a rotating axis. Look through the comments below, which share some other useful tips.

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

I mentioned over at SMA that I thought this was cool, and that nylon washers help them to stay tight for longer.
Maybe this could be put up in the article section of the site?

Jesse O,  I just checked out your tutorial.  Fantastic, way to work though the process!  I am going to have to try building one based on your tutorial.  Very Cool

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

I made this topic a sticky topic, so it's easy to find.

Thanks for the replies! Marc H: I'll look into nylon washers next time I'm at the local hardware store.

you can wrap an armature in foil or cling film, which you'd have to do anyway because the plasticine would get all squished into the joints.

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Jesse O,
I used your tutorial to build the arms on this puppet.  Thanks for the idea!

Re: Cheap Armature Tutorial!

Wow it looks great! I'm going to have to build one soon. Hopefully I'll get to use it in my July comp entry.

Which I haven't started yet...
