September 2010 Challenge
September 2010 Challenge
Here is where previous monthly challenge winners can post their ideas for the future challenges. For monthly challenges, the new ideas must be very short and specific. Here are some examples, none of which need to be used - but just to give a general idea:
- walking
- climbing
- slithering
- picking up objects
Or, if you want to be more specific you could say choose something like:
- a snake uses a hammer
- a cat slithers into a cup
- a bug climbs a hill
The Quarterly Challenges are where more broad ideas can be posted. Here are ideas that we should refrain from using in the monthly challenges:
- A king sends his soldiers into battle against the walking trees
- The kittens jumped into a pool of water while the old man realizes he is drinking too much
If anyone feels they can improve upon the winners ideas, they may post their improvements below the winners ideas. The previous winners will get the final say on if they will go along with your improvements or not.

Re: September 2010 Challenge
Ok, it looks like the undersea adventure - being that it is a broad topic is going to be our first quarterly challenge. Now that leaves a problem. For our September monthly challenge we need an idea. I'm going to choose the first idea, then the rules will take hold and the winner will choose the next.
The idea I'm going to choose is: Throwing a knife
Hopefully it's simple enough. Everyone gets one month to come up with the basic animation, but I think it would be ok to elaborate on it.
The only question I want to throw out there is, should we start on September 1st, or now? It might make it easier to have the last day of each month be the day everyone needs to submit their animations by. Anynyone have any thoughts about this? For me it doesn't matter since I won't be making an animation, and it's up to everyones schedules who is.
Re: September 2010 Challenge
Throwing a knife - could be very simple, like you say. Or could get more elaborate - I'm starting to see all sorts of possibilities ( a whole circus knife throwing act with gorgeous assistant, target, 6 knives...), so that's why I will probably stick to the quarterly challenges, not the monthlies.
So it's not for me to say.
So if this is for September, we've missed out on an August challenge in this process of setting up the quarterly and monthly challenges. But there is a bit more time to think about it and make a puppet and a knife if needed.
Re: September 2010 Challenge
I like this idea, monthly exercises will be excellent additions to peoples show reels you should mention that somewhere in the description posts!
I'm always being asked about my principles of animation exercise videos and they've garnered a fair few views on youtube now
Re: September 2010 Challenge
In a way, I've already done my knife throwing exercise! Well, it's a sword, does that count? Obviously I didn't just knock it off for this challenge, it was done months ago. I put my Sinbad Vs Skeleton swordfight up at Youtube, and at one point Sokurah throws a sword to the skeleton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcyunk_gezc
Re: September 2010 Challenge
Good idea aNILEator, I just added a tiny statement on the monthly and quarterly description pages about building up your animation reels!
Nick, I guess in a previous thread we brought up the topic of old films being used in the challenges. I guess the consensus was that only new animation would be accepted. But your video is definitely an inspiration for everyone else. Actually I added your film to our front page in the news, it's great work! I really like how you got the likenesses to the original actors. Even the hair was sculpted just right. Isn't it funny how sculpted hair matches so well? I guess they used gobs of hair spray on the real actors back then.
Re: September 2010 Challenge
That's cool, I didn't really expect it to be eligible for the competition. Just realised, as I put it up at Youtube, that by coincidence it had a bit of cutlery chucking in there!
Back in the fifties I don't think hair spray was invented, it would have been Bryl Cream! Yes, it really does help when going with sculpted hair, if the original hairdo was one solid mass. Bald is good too!
