‘My Melody & Kuromi’ Stop Motion Series on Netflix

animateclay

Coming this July, Netflix will be releasing a new series. Netflix has been supporting stop motion productions for some time now which is great news for the industry. This time Japanese studio WIT STUDIO will be the recipient of funds. It may be the first time Western audiences get a glimpse into the mixture of cultural icons from Japan, mixed with the art of stop motion animation. There is currently not a ton of information about the stories yet. The YouTube video description for the newly supported ‘My Melody & Kuromi’ series teaser says:

"Beloved Sanrio characters come to life in stop-motion series ‘My Melody & Kuromi’ this July 2025, celebrating the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi! The series is directed by Tomoki Misato, written by Shuko Nemoto, and produced by TORUKU from WIT STUDIO."

I tried to research TORUKU a bit to see if maybe they had some behind the scenes pictures or videos. But I wasn't able to find anything. I think that the studio is an offshoot of WIT that was set up just for filming the series. For now, it's very secretive, but we can always re-visit things this July when the series is released. What are your thoughts? Maybe 2025 will be a good year for stop motion!
